Tech Talk

In August 2007, Disney purchased the younger set social networking site Club Penguin to the tune of $700million dollars. Who knows what that will mean, but I imagine consumerism will creep into icy Penguin habitat quickly. The 2-year old Web environment allows users to pick an avatar - a penguin, of course - and waddle around in a virtual world. As Michael Agger wrote in his Slate.com article about his two week virtual experience in Penguin land, the world is addictin and filled with playground nuances.

It is however, heavily monitored and relatively safe for kids. Type a curse word and you're banned. Agger's colleague Emily Yoffe discovered her young focus group was not so enchanted with the icy Club Penguin universe.
