Early in September, as the weather in Charlotte begins to make a slow march toward fall, the festive sounds and aromas of the Yiasou Greek Festival can be felt on the breeze. Moms@Work

Sept. 10

Being a working mom in the 21st century can be pretty stress-filled and the balance between family and work is a tough line to walk, so why not come out for an afternoon of encouragement and support! Family-Friendly 40 companies – a select group of companies who go above and beyond to accommodate working parents and families - will be on hand for networking, product demonstrations, even massages.

This year Moms@Work is proud to welcome guest speaker Ellyn Spragins, who recently authored: "If I’d Known Then: Women in Their 20s and 30s Write Letters to Their Younger Selves.” This inspirational book is a compilation of letters from successful women, including actress Jessica Alba, Olympic Skater Sasha Cohen, and singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb, to name a few, filled with wisdom and wit, and offering advice to themselves – if they could go back in time. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

New for 2008 is the Coffee Meet and Greet: An hour before lunch there will be a coffee to get to know other mothers in professional fields. Come share your joys and lessons on being a working mom and celebrate motherhood in a new way!

A One-Mom Show

Sept. 30-Oct. 26

Being a mom is an adventure in storytelling and “Mother Load,” the hilarious Off-Broadway hit mixes motherhood, comedy and true confession! Creator Amy Wilson, who made her Broadway debut as “Sunny Freitag,” in the Tony Award-winning play “The Last Night of Ballyhoo,” and was a series regular on the sitcoms such as “Norm” with Norm MacDonald and “Daddio” with Michael Chiklis, and had a recurring role on “Felicity,” basis this roaring comedy on her own experience as the mother of a 4- and a 2-year old.

This one-woman show has moms (and anyone who has a mother!) lining up from coast to coast for a night of laughs about diapers, spit-up and strollers. From prenatal yoga to preschool interviews, the heroine of this show struggles to throw off the "Mother Load" of unrealistic expectations, ignore the competitive mothers lurking in every playgroup, and somehow find the time to enjoy her kids. “Mother Load” lampoons the competitive and ever challenging quest to be the ‘perfect’ mom while reminding us of all those special moms in our lives. Wed.-Sun. through Oct. 26. $29.50-$34.50. Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, 130 N. Tryon St. 704-379-380. www.blumenthalcenter.org.
