The World Aloft-1908: The Year the Airplane Went Public.

Summary: See a full-size, 21-foot-long replica of the Wright Flyer, period artifacts, models and pieces of the original Wright Flyer on display at the N.C. Transportation Museum. “The World Aloft” celebrates May 14, 1908 as the day the Wright Brothers were first observed by credible witnesses as the official pioneers of flight. Artifacts never before seen by the public also are on display, including a 1907 Ford Model R, a “boneshaker” bicycle, period furniture, shoes and hats, toys and musical instruments. Children can enjoy interactive displays, with a chance to create their own cartoon drawing of Wilbur and Orville Wright and the Wright Flyer. A telegraph machine allows kids to tell the world about the first powered flight. All ages.

Summary: Journey into the homes of people around the world, through a traveling exhibition created by the Children’s Museum of Memphis. Explore how landscape, climate, resources, culture and lifestyle determine the way a house functions and what it looks like. Three model homes: a Mongolian herder’s ger, an m’bure from the tropics of Fiji and a stilt house from a Malaysian fishing village. Hands-on activities including designing and constructing houses.

CALENDAR POLICY

Charlotte Parent magazine’s calendar provides information for parents and families about activities they can enjoy each month. Events listed in the calendar are typically free or low-cost activities targeted to parents or families. The calendar will also include annual or featured events that may require paid admission, but are decided to be important community or entertainment attractions applicable to families and kids. Examples: holiday events, parades, street fairs, weekend festivals, local children’s plays or children’s character concerts.

To submit your event, e-mail, mail or fax your event's name, date, time, location, cost, contact phone number, Website and a short description. Include electronic images if available.

Submissions must be received by the 8th of the preceeding month to be included in the print calendar. For example, information for a February event must be in our office before January 8. Events received later than the 8th will be posted in the online calendar in a timely manner throughout the month.

All submissions will be considered for publication. Inclusion is based on editorial space and event relevance at the discretion of the editor.
