Book Review - Baseball Poetry?

Book Review

The Pitch is on the Way:

Poems About Baseball and Life

by Dan Liberthson

I like poetry and I like baseball but I was skeptical about these two together. Poet and author Dan Liberthson has made me re-think them with this wonderful collection of honest, precise musings and observations about America’s favorite pastime. Running through every position, each “player” at a game is represented, even the hot dog vendor. The author leaves no detail unturned. Liberthson subtly weaves one of life’s lessons in unexpected places. In “Catcher” Liberthson describes him as a “senior warrior…who sets the world spinning with the minutest sign…and all the game’s colors bloom from his glove.” Blending nature and baseball is no easy feat and this fan does it remarkably well. $16.95

Coach's Corner

Coach/Dude Richard Jones

Name: Richard Jones

Team: Blue Thunder at the Siskey YMCA soccer and Spider Monkeys in Siskey YMCA flag football.

How long coaching? A decade or so.

Why become a coach? No one else would step up! Now I don't want to stop.

What advice do you give to kids before, during and after the game? Always listen to coach, have fun and give it their best. During the game, I honestly can't shut my flapping gums.

What advice do you have for parents? Cheer for every single player on the field and never, I mean never, say anything negative to your child or another child about his or her play.

Favorite sports moment? One little dude wasn't getting soccer and finally he had a breakthrough. He dribbled, he scored, he played defense. After the game the little dude, his father and I all had a group screamandshout. That was fun.
